The Use Of Psycholgy, Ethology & The Social Sciences In SEPS Self Defense
As the saying goes, there is more than one way to skin a cat and there is certainly more than one way to deal with an
aggressive/violent situation (unless of course you have already been attacked). By understanding how aggressors act, work
and understand when in highly emotional states more options are available to the individual having to deal with them.
Responding physically is but one limited option.
From a physiological perspective, fear and anger are very hard to distinguish between. The body when in either ‘emotional’ state is going
through almost exactly the same processes e.g. increase in heart rate and breathing, the release of adrenaline etc. How this single
state in interpreted determines whether the emotion is fear or anger. To the body they are the same, to our rational/understanding mind
they are very different. However both have the ability to empower us to act.
Some behaviours we learn and some we have inbuilt. Some ‘fears’ we learn and some we have inbuilt (Ethology), both can cause us to
become aggressive and violent. Understanding how not to trigger these natural behaviours is vital to dealing with aggressive individuals
e.g. even a rabbit will attack when cornered. Understanding how fear causes people to think and ‘reason’ is also extremely important.
Understanding how individuals propel themselves into emotional states of anger is also very important. It is vital to understand that
individuals in an emotionl state of anger, always see themselves as ‘right’, they exist in an alternate reality where morality is something
that they dictate. Knowing this, teaches that to deal with individuals in such a state, you yourslef cannot adopt the position of being ‘right’
if you are to be effective.
SEPS is founded on the research findings of socialogists, psychologists and ethologists, working in academia, the military, law enforcement and
correctional institutions. We also conduct our own research to add to these works.
However understanding both the motives and reasonings of aggressors in violent situations is only half the story. The same research is used to
understand how targets and victims of sucg aggression can cope and harness their own fear.
It is the side to SEPS, which enables it techniques to work effectively and efficiently.
We also conduct our own research program, so as to better understand the dynamics and effects of aggression and violence. You can read more about
this on our self defense research page, which can be accessed by clicking here.
